Copywriting – Translation
How much does a German to English translation cost when done by a native English speaker?
Or … how long is a piece of string?
Back when I was a child, and I asked my dad how long he would be away, he would answer, “How long is a piece of string?”. It took me a long time to understand what he meant.
Wie lange ist eine Schnur?
A piece of string has length but that length is unknown. The phrase means that the quantitative answer is not known. It’s used in English when we wish to say that we don’t know the answer to the question such as, “how long will it take?” or “how big is it?”. Or “how much will it cost?”
It’s what goes through my head when clients ask, “How much will it cost?”. The answer is almost always, “It depends”.
Here are some of the variables that will affect the price:
- the length of the text
- the delivery from the client (e.g. format)
- the amount of research needed.
- the topic
- image search
- the deadline
It’s impossible to give a definitive price for a text, but to give you an idea, here are some examples of packages I offer:
