That\u2019s because in English, we have two words for this German term \u2013 digitization<\/strong> and digitalization<\/strong> \u2013 and even English native speakers don\u2019t always know the difference between them.<\/p>\n

No wonder a lot of organizations are getting this wrong! If you are using an online translation tool, it won\u2019t distinguish between the two words, and won\u2019t\u2014unlike a human English native speaker\u2014the AI tool won\u2019t ask you to clarify.<\/p>\n

To make it easier for you to understand the difference, I\u2019ll use an example from my life \u2013 or rather, from the life of my father. Let\u2019s start with Digitization \u2013 digitization.<\/b><\/p>\n

My dad was a compositor for a local newspaper\u2014that\u2019s a Schriftsetzer for the German readers. The newspaper industry is one that has been completely transformed over the past 50 years, and that began with digitization.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Digitization is the process of converting data and information from an analog format to a digital one.<\/strong>\u00a0This can be as simple as transferring your music collection from vinyl to CDs to an online service or scanning your important documents.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Or, in the case of the newspaper where my father worked, digitizing\u00a0historical newspaper articles, like this one from 1845, on the visit of Queen Victoria to W\u00fcrzburg<\/a>. This process didn\u2019t change the work being done at the newspaper company, or the company itself. It merely preserved old newspaper articles for the future.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For most organizations, digitization started decades ago\u2014and \u201cthe majority of our technical memory has been in digital format since the early 2000s\u201d, as this research paper notes.<\/a> If you are making in your organization, you are probably in the process of digitalization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

My dad worked during the era of \u2018hot metal printing.\u2019 The switch from letterpress to offset printing, as\u00a0described in detail in this video<\/a>, didn\u2019t just digitize the content, it digitalized the process. In this case, digitalization completely changed that part of the business.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Digitalization is \u201c<\/strong>the process of moving to a digital business,<\/strong>\u201d according to the Gartner Glossary<\/a>, while a Brookings report focuses more on how it affects people,\u00a0stating \u201cthe acquisition of digital skills has now become a prerequisite for individual, industry, and regional success.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We use digital technology and our digitized data to change operations, business models, and customer experiences\u2014to create new value for companies and their employees, partners, and customers.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

While researching this post, I came across\u00a0this fascinating interview<\/a>\u00a0with a man who worked with my dad in the\u00a0caseroom<\/em>\u00a0at DC Thomson. He says he\u2019ll never again \u201chear the clacking, thrumming sound of a linotype machine or smell that mix of ink, boiling lead and petrol,\u201d due to the move to cleaner, quieter, and less labor-intensive offset printing.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The process of\u00a0<\/span>digitizing newspaper content<\/strong>\u00a0preserved the information for future generations, but it probably didn\u2019t have a huge effect on the company workforce.\u00a0<\/span>Digitalizing the printing process<\/strong>, however, brought immense changes. It’s not clear just how many jobs were lost due to the move from hot metal to offset printing, as this was the start of a much larger shift in the media industry, but in one extreme case – the Wapping Dispute – News International went from 6,800 staff to just 670 for the same output.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While digitalization completely transformed the actual printing process, the real digital transformation of the newspaper industry was still a few years away.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the 1990s, with the advent of the internet, newspapers began publishing online, but traditional publishers had competition from innovative new websites, news aggregation platforms, and blogs\u2014not to mention social media. With so much content freely available online, news publishers struggled to create new revenue streams and monetization concepts.\u00a0As the New York Times Innovation Report, 2014<\/a>\u00a0noted, \u201c\u2026 with the endless upheaval in technology, reader habits, and the entire business model, The Times needs to pursue smart new strategies for growing our audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Digital transformation goes far beyond the technical changes of digitalization. Accenture\u00a0defines<\/a>\u00a0digital transformation as \u201cthe process by which companies embed technologies across their businesses to drive fundamental change.<\/strong>\u201d The organization benefits from \u201cincreased efficiency, greater business agility and, ultimately, the unlocking of new value for employees, customers and shareholders.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

If you think of digitalization as being individual projects that change specific areas of the business, digital transformation is an over-arching strategy that affects all business areas, changing the business model, operations, processes, and company culture.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

What did that mean for the newspaper and media industry? Digital transformation for my father\u2019s company meant not just publishing news online, but embracing new technology, and \u201cgrowing revenue streams in digital, B2B, and events\u2014and building a profitable subscription-based business<\/a>\u201c. In recent years, the company has expanded its digital storytelling, using video, audio, live blogging, and live events to\u00a0connect with the local communities<\/a>\u00a0it serves.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You can see \u2013\u00a0<\/span>digital transformation goes way beyond digitization of content, or digitalization of processes<\/strong>. That\u2019s why digital transformation projects are so important to companies, and can make such a dramatic difference in their future success.<\/span><\/p>\n

By the way, if you are wondering what the difference between digitization<\/strong> and digitisation<\/strong> or digitalization<\/strong> and digitalisation<\/strong> is – it’s very simple.<\/p>\n

As with many other similar words, in American English<\/strong>, these words are spelled with a z<\/em>, and in British English<\/strong>, they are spelled with an s<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I normally write in British English, but for this post, I’ve used the American English term as it’s the one used most often. For consistency, I’ve also used American English punctuation\u2014such as the em dash\u2014where I’d normally use the British version.<\/p>\n
