A buzzword is a word or phrase \u2013 often jargon \u2013 that\u2019s trendy at a particular time or in a certain context. It sounds important, clever, or professional, but rarely adds real meaning.<\/p>\n

Why buzzwords make your English writing worse<\/h2>\n

\u201cLet me nutshell that for you\u201d is doubly complicated because it\u2019s based on the idiom \u201cto put it in a nutshell.\u201d If English isn\u2019t your native language, you might not know that expression.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cTo put it in a nutshell\u201d means to explain something briefly \u2013 short enough to fit inside a nutshell.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Another English expression is \u201cBuzzword Bingo\u201d (or \u201cBS Bingo\u201d if you\u2019re being less polite). If we played a round, \u201clet me nutshell that for you\u201d would definitely win a prize. Instead of this buzzword, I’d say:<\/p>\n

\u201cTo put it simply, \u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s easier for everyone to understand \u2013 and no one will close the tab in confusion (or anger!)<\/p>\n

If you want readers to keep reading (and not roll their eyes), avoid empty buzzwords like \u201cblue sky thinking,\u201d \u201chelicopter thinking,\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cmission critical.\u201d<\/strong> This is especially important when you\u2019re writing for an international audience.<\/p>\n

** The concept of pain points isn’t bad, but it sounds like internal marketing jargon that lots of your customers won’t understand. A better option is ‘What improvements would you like to make?’ It also has the advantage of being more friendly, and positive instead of negative.<\/p>\n

My tip as a copywriter for English content:Write like you speak to a client over coffee. If you wouldn\u2019t say it out loud, don\u2019t write it. Would you say ‘blue sky thinking’ out loud? No, then use a different, clearer word.<\/p>\n

That way, your reader immediately understands your meaning, whether they speak English as their native language, or as a foreign language.<\/p>\n
