* Did you know that the English idiom ‘to buy a pig in a poke’ has a similar history to ‘eine Katze im Sack kaufen’ in German?
And a similar meaning. Both refer to purchasing something that you haven’t seen in advance, and possibly being scammed. And both came from the Middle Ages, when goods or small animals were often sold in a sack (which was also called a ‘poke’ in English).
Market traders would try to fool people by putting something other than a pig in the sack, such as a cat – which is where the German saying originated.
